SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT IN MMU

MMU SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE AND POLICIES

The MMU Sustainability Policies are comprised of several policies that reflect the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) components. These policies encompass areas such as Energy, Water, Waste, and Campus Operations i.e. procurement, the use of green materials, and the treatment of staff and students. These policies serve as a guideline for all staff, students, vendors, and campus visitors to ensure the implementation of sustainable practices within the university campus and beyond. They promote environmental stewardship, enhance resource efficiency, and support sustainable campus development. The policies will be reviewed periodically to ensure their relevance and effectiveness and to align and comply with all relevant environmental laws, regulations, and the parent company’s standards.

NET ZERO EMISSIONS TARGET AND CARBON EMISSIONS

MMU is dedicated towards attaining carbon neutrality by 2050 with a holistic set of sustainability strategies and initiatives that encompasses campus operations, energy consumption, supply chain, education and awareness that will realise MMU's bold net zero target by 2050.

Towards this net zero target, MMU has tracked its greenhouse gases emissions based on the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) GHG Protocol. The detailed carbon emissions are computed and presented in the annual Carbon Emissions Summary.

Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Social Wellbeing

In an effort to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the university, a whole of institution approach is taken where a team of resource persons in the Sustainable Development Committee of the University takes on the role of advising and promoting the development of policies, awareness and trainings to advance diversity, equity, inclusion and social wellbeing on campus. The focal point of these initiatives is helmed by an appointed resource person who coordinates these initiatives in MMU.  You are welcome to initiate contact with the resource person for DEI:

Sustainability Literacy Awareness and Knowledge Assessment for Students and Staff

The objective of this annual campus-wide sustainability literacy & knowledge assessment for all students and staff is to drive change and establish sustainability as an important facet of campus life in Multimedia University (MMU). By understanding their current level of sustainability literacy and knowledge, we can identify areas for improvement.

This assessment was conducted online where all students and staff were invited to participate via mass mail and announcement on the learning management system. Participation was voluntary. This assessment has received the MMU Research Ethics Committee Approval (Reference No: EA0772024).

It is composed of 50 multiple-choice questions in English that takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. The scope of the questions includes global and Malaysian contexts, sustainability knowledge i.e., environmental, social and governance issues. They are sourced according to ESG Principles and UNESCO Key Competencies for Sustainability that are then aligned against MMU’s Permata Dunia GEMS Attributes. A total of 2881 respondents completed the assessment in 2024.

At the end of the assessment, staff and students were informed of their scores that will enable them to ascertain their sustainability awareness level which are:

  • Novice: Indicates minimal awareness of sustainability.
  • Intermediate: Shows a fair grasp of sustainability knowledge.
  • Proficient: Demonstrates solid knowledge of sustainability.
  • Expert: Represents a comprehensive understanding of sustainability.
