Yew Zu Xiang, a student from the Faculty of Business (FOB) who participated as a solo player (team name: Noideas) won second runner-up and walked away with RM10,000 at the Inter-Varsity Stock Challenge (IVSC) 2019. The competition which was held at Bursa Malaysia Berhad, Kuala Lumpur, attracted 3000 students from three varsities namely Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Taylor’s University and Multimedia University (MMU).
Four teams from MMU also bagged fortnightly cash prizes. They were (i) Team ‘COS’ from FOB– Liew Kai Siang, Por Lee Wen, Wong Wai Kit, and Lau Zi Yin who won Top 2 in Week 4 with a cash prize of RM1,000; (ii) Team ‘Noideas’ from FOB– Yew Zu Xiang who won Top 2 in Week 6 with a cash prize of RM1,000; (iii) Team ‘3_Musketes’ from FOB– Lau Jia Lerk, Paul Ang Toh Barn, and Lau Chun Hung who won Top 3 in Week 8 with a cash prize of RM500 and (iv) Team ‘Old_boyz” from FOM- Jeevamkumar Vellasamy, Syamsul Effandi Ismail, Mohamad Faiz Nordin, and Muhammad Fikri Mohd Fuad who won Top 3 in Week 12 with a cash prize of RM500.
With the support from Bursa Malaysia, this competition was jointly organised by N2N Connect Berhad, Public Investment Bank Berhad (mentor of MMU’s teams throughout a three-month interactive stock trading competition), Affin Hwang Capital, Macquarie Capital Securities and AmInvestment Bank Berhad. The competition was held to elevate financial literacy and to provide university students with the first-hand experience in investing and trading in capital markets.
During the challenge, the participants were divided into 787 teams, each being challenged to achieve the highest returns from investments with a virtual start-up capital of RM100,000. Apart from demonstrating the ability to maximise investment returns, they were required to demonstrate a sound understanding of the trading strategies. Team ‘Goreng’ from Taylor’s University bagged the Grand Prize of RM30,000.
