TM R&D Wins Malaysia Technology Excellence Award

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), a subsidiary of MMU, has been recognised at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2025 in the AI – Environmental Services category. The award highlights TM R&D’s Smart Forestry AI Tools Enhancement, a groundbreaking solution that is transforming forestry assessments and biodiversity conservation in Malaysia.

Developed in collaboration with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), the AI-powered tool improves the accuracy and efficiency of tree data collection, particularly in measuring diameter at breast height (DBH)—a key factor in calculating forest biomass and carbon stock. Traditionally, this process is time-consuming and requires manual measurements, but TM R&D’s mobile app automates DBH calculations using AI, reducing the time required from two minutes per tree to just 20 seconds with a 96% accuracy rate.

This innovation not only enhances data collection but also improves safety for forestry teams by minimizing ground-level assessments. The solution supports conservation efforts, enables quicker carbon stock reporting, and aligns with Malaysia’s sustainability and climate action goals. TM R&D’s achievement underscores its commitment to using AI for real-world impact, ensuring forestry assessments are more efficient, accurate, and safer.
