To boost financial literacy and investment awareness among students, the Banking & Finance Department of the Faculty of Business (FOB) and the Student Lifestyle & Experience Department (STyLE) joined forces for a University Social Responsibility (USR) initiative. The centrepiece of this initiative was an engaging investment talk featuring experts from UOB Kay Hian Securities (M) Sdn Bhd on 28 November 2024. The event was attended by 50 banking and finance students.
The speakers were Ms. Ong Siew Gek, Manager of Priority Banking and Dealer’s Representative, and Mr. Muhammad Akmal Ms Aris, Priority Banking Advisor. Their combined expertise provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the investment landscape.
Ms. Ong Siew Gek kicked off the session by introducing the basics of investment, highlighting both the potential benefits and risks involved. She emphasised the importance of informed decision-making and the need for a strategic approach to investing. Her talk provided a balanced view, helping students understand that while investments can offer significant returns, they also come with inherent risks that must be carefully managed.
Following this, Mr. Muhammad Akmal Ms Aris delved into the intricacies of stock market analysis. He provided an overview of fundamental analysis, which involves evaluating a company’s financial health and market position, and technical analysis, which focuses on statistical trends derived from trading activity. His session equipped students with the tools to analyze stocks effectively, making them more confident in navigating the stock market.
The collaboration between FOB and STyLE in organising this event underscores their commitment to preparing students for the real world. By exposing students to the fundamentals of investment and stock market analysis, they are better positioned to make informed financial decisions in the future. This initiative not only enhances students’ academic experience but also contributes to their personal and professional growth.
