Peperiskaan, a final-year project short film by Faculty of Cinematic Arts (FCA), has been selected for the prestigious 35th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF). The film tells the compelling story of En Qi, a young Chinese primary student who faces challenges in learning Malay spelling, often mixing it with English, which draws the frustration of his strict teacher. This heartfelt narrative reflects the nuances of multicultural learning and the everyday struggles of language acquisition in a diverse setting, resonating strongly with audiences. Since its inception in 1987, SGIFF has been a major platform celebrating both Singaporean and international cinema, focusing especially on innovative and influential Asian films. This renowned festival showcases a rich program of screenings, masterclasses, discussions, and awards, dedicated to supporting homegrown talent and fostering interdisciplinary creativity. A key highlight of SGIFF, the Silver Screen Awards, honors outstanding achievements in Asian cinema through its Asian Feature Film Competition and Southeast Asian Short Film Competition. For this year, SGIFF runs from 28 November until 8 December 2024.
Peperiskaan will compete in the Southeast Asian Short Film Competition, which this year presents 24 films across five programs, each capturing the diversity and creativity of the region while offering a vibrant portrait of Southeast Asia’s cultural landscape.
Congratulations to Peperiskaan‘s production team, From Home Pictures, and all involved in bringing this project to life. We look forward to seeing the film shine on the international stage at SGIFF and are excited to celebrate this remarkable achievement with the MMU community.
