On 5 October 2024, the Faculty of Information Science & Technology (FIST) teamed up with the MMU Employee Social and Recreational Alliance (MESRA) to host an educational initiative titled “Digital Toolkit: Practical IT Skills for Young Learners” at the Melaka campus. This University Social Responsibility (USR) program aimed to empower underprivileged children, as well as children of MESRA members, by enhancing their digital literacy.
The half-day workshop featured the expertise of faculty members, including Madam Ainee, Mr. Leonard, Ms. Chandrika, and Madam Julie, alongside Diploma in Information Technology interns, Mr. Chee Jiong King and Mr. Cheah Wen Jun. The session focused on teaching essential IT skills through hands-on activities using key software tools such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Canva, and ChatGPT.
Participants learned how to create and format documents in Microsoft Word and were introduced to basic Excel functions, where they crafted a school timetable. In addition to this, they explored graphic design through the Canva application, allowing them to unleash their creativity.
Another highlight of the workshop was the demonstration by interns on the use of artificial intelligence. They showcased how ChatGPT can assist students in learning, problem-solving, and enhancing productivity, offering a glimpse into the potential of AI in education.
The program concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony, where Mdm Norashimah Harun, a MESRA representative, presented the young participants certificates of participation and special souvenirs sponsored by MESRA. This workshop provided a valuable opportunity for young learners to gain confidence in using digital tools, equipping them with practical IT skills that will support their academic and personal development. The initiative not only helped bridge the digital divide but also empowered the next generation with the skills they need to thrive in a technology-driven world.
