A group of students from the Faculty of Law (FOL) represented MMU to China to participate in the “BFSU-WANHUIDA Cup” Intellectual Property Moot Court Competition 2024, recently. The event, jointly hosted by the China Intellectual Property Society and Beijing Foreign Studies University and sponsored by Wanhuida Intellectual Property, saw 16 teams from various countries competing. The MMU team comprised three third-year students: Ong Jing Ling, Ong Yi Jun, and Wan Abdul Azim bin Wan Faizal. The students were accompanied by the Multimedia University (MMU) Special Interest Group (SIG) Mooting, lecturer advisor, Ms. Nur Syakirah Binti Hj Maimun Aqsha Lubis.

The team was guided by Associate Professor Dr. Dennis Khong Wye Keen, who provided comprehensive knowledge on China Patent Law. Additionally, the invaluable assistance of three researchers, Bee Chun Wei, Angeline Yong Xiao Qi, and Keith Tan Wen Yu was crucial to the team’s success. The team also benefited from the expertise of an external trainer, Mr. Jonathan Goh, an alumnus and a lawyer from H.L Goh & Co.

Furthermore, Assistant Professor Dr. Liew Kia Wai @ Alec, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, provided invaluable insights into the technical aspects and intricacies of the patent involved in the moot problem. The team made an impressive journey through the semi-finals and finals, ultimately securing the prestigious position of second runner-up in the competition. Additionally, Ms. Ong Yi Jun was awarded the title of best oralist in the competition.
