The Faculty of Engineering (FOE) through its Centre for Digital Home collaborated with the Malaysian Technical Standards Forum Bhd (MTSFB) and IEEE Malaysia Communication Society and Vehicular Technology Society (ComSoc/VTS) Joint Chapter to organise the 2022 National Colloquium on Internet of Things (NCIoT 2022) on 10th November 2022 at Multipurpose Hall (MPH), Cyberjaya campus. With its theme, IoT for Smart City Applications, more than 50 participants from industries, government agencies, academia, and students attended the event. The attendees were enlightened on the importance of IoT, specifically in the development of smart cities in Malaysia.

The event kicked off with a welcoming speech by Prof. Ir. Dr. Hezerul Abdul Karim, Deputy Dean of FOE cum Chairman of Centre for Digital Home. The event continued with speeches by Ir. Dr. Nordin bin Ramli, Chair Elect/Vice Chair of IEEE Malaysia Section Chair, and Prof. Dr. Mohamad Yusoff Alias, Chairman of IEEE Malaysia ComSoc/VTS Joint Chapter as well as the Chairman of NCIoT2022. Puan Zaleha Abu Bakar, General Manager of MTSFB officiated the event.

The first technical session of the event was the keynote address by Dr. Gopinath Rao Sinniah who is the Chairman of Reference Panel, MTSFB. Dr. Gopinath has been actively involved in developing technical standards related to the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities in Malaysia. During the keynote address, he presented the current development of IoT applications in smart cities, especially in Malaysia.

The event resumed with an industrial forum on the topic “The application of IoT for Smart Cities: Challenges and Future”. The forum was moderated by Prof. Dr. Mohamad Yusoff bin Alias from MMU and the list of panel members included Ts. Tharma G., Chief Executive Officer of BNetworks, Mr. Razim Faris, the ASEAN Director for Mueller Water Product, Inc. who is also an MMU alumnus and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohamad Hanif Md Saad, Deputy Director, Institute of IR 4.0, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).  Each of the panelists discussed the application of IoT in their specific industries.

The participants had the opportunity to visit the indoor smart farm at FOE. At the lab, they were shown some examples of how IoT is being used for smart farming. The smart farm lab is a collaboration work between MMU and MSD. Throughout the event, two students from Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara Petaling Jaya exhibited their projects related to IoT as well.
