King Sejong Institute (KSI) MMU Melaka hosted its first Korean Speech Contest virtually on 28th October 2021. More than 50 participants from all over Malaysia registered for the speech contest and only 22 participants were chosen for the finals round through Google Meet. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, the President of MMU graced the event mentioned that this contest serves as a good avenue for students to enhance their foreign language skills in his speech. The purpose of the contest is to commemorate Hangeul Day, a special day in the South of Korea that celebrates the invention of the Korean alphabet, which is held on 9th October every year. The speech contestants were given three minutes and options from two topics, ‘Why and How I Started to Learn Korean language’ or ‘My Favourite Korean Culture’.

As a result, Farhana Haslan Farouk from Management & Science University (MSU) won the contest and received a Samsung Galaxy A03s and plaque while R Goo Ooi from MMU clinched second place and won a Samsung Galaxy Fit and plaque. Emerald Kee Wee Ing also from MMU secured third place and received a Korean skincare set and plaque. Other finalists were also given complimentary gifts. The closing ceremony was also attended by Prof. Dr. Ho Chin Kuan, Vice President Academic & International Relations, Dr. Lim Way Soong, Director of International Relations Office; Dr. Ong Sue Lyn, Dean of Faculty of Applied Communication cum Director of KSI MMU, staff and students of MMU and KSI, as well as over 150 viewers of the online contest.
