The Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) hosted the second episode of its Alumni Webinar Series with Ir. Yong Gee Suan, the Head of Product Development in Daikin R&D Malaysia, recently. The speaker shares his experiences and challenges of becoming an HVAC Engineer in the Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) field for the past 15 years. Ir. Yong, who is a BEM registered Professional Engineer and also an ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer, received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2006.

Speaking about his career journey as an HVAC engineer, Ir. Yong explained the job responsibilities to oversee the design, installation, and operation of systems that heat, cool, and ventilate indoor spaces. As an HVAC engineer with mechanical engineering background, the speaker also pointed up that mechanical and structural design, materials, and thermodynamics are the core aspects of the HVAC product development processes.

It is essential for an aspiring HVAC engineer to equip oneself with the knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and electronics engineering and to familiarize with the HVAC codes and standards applied in the HVAC industry with the aim to optimize the product performance and improve the energy efficiency of HVAC systems. Ultimately, HVAC engineering plays a significant role in working towards environmental sustainability for a better future.
