The Faculty of Engineering (FOE) through its Industrial Linkage Committee organised the Industry Forum 2024 on 21 November 2024 at the Cyberjaya campus. With the theme “Green Technology and Sustainable Practices in Malaysia: Innovations and Alignment with Global Trends,” the event brought together over 140 participants for dynamic discussions on Malaysia’s sustainable future, exploring pathways to align local efforts with global sustainability objectives. The forum kicked off with a welcoming address by Prof. Ir. Dr. Hezerul Abdul Karim, Deputy Dean of FOE.

Key highlights included Ir. Ts. Zulkiflee Bin Umar from the Energy Commission outlining Malaysia’s roadmap to carbon neutrality by 2050, driven by a transition to solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources. He highlighted the critical role of engineers in spearheading innovative eco-friendly solutions to achieve these ambitious goals. Additionally, Ir. Lee Yuen How of EV Connection discussed the role of electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia’s sustainable future. Ir. Lee stressed the importance of upskilling engineers in fields like AI, electronics, and electrical engineering to help achieve Malaysia’s Zero Carbon goals.

Another speaker, Ir. Khirul Nizam Bin Shamsudin from Tenaga Nasional Berhad outlined TNB’s sustainability goals, including its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. He discussed the company’s strategic shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, advancements in energy storage and hydrogen technologies, and the promotion of energy efficiency through the prosumer model—where consumers both generate and consume their own energy.

He also emphasised that balancing sustainability, energy security, and affordability would be key challenges and stressed the importance of investments in smart grids and infrastructure upgrades to ensure reliability while minimising environmental impact. The forum fostered valuable exchanges among industry leaders, engineers, and academics. It inspired actionable steps for advancing green technology and highlighted the collaborative efforts required to build a sustainable Malaysia aligned with global trends.
