On 8 November 2024, the Learning Institute for Empowerment (LIfE) hosted an inspiring Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Talk, led by YABhg. Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Richard Malanjum, Ombudsperson of the United Nations and Malaysia’s 9th Chief Justice. The event welcomed distinguished attendees, including Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU, and Dr. Ong Sue Lyn, Director of LIfE.
Titled “The United Nations (UN) in the Context of Human Rights and ESG with Special Reference to Malaysia,” the talk offered valuable insights into the UN’s critical role in promoting human rights and integrating ESG principles. Tun Richard provided a compelling exploration of Malaysia’s achievements and challenges, emphasising the intersection of global human rights efforts and sustainable governance. His perspective sparked engaging discussions on how Malaysia can further embed these essential concepts into its national framework.
The event drew a captivated audience of 3,300 students, who had the unique opportunity to interact with Tun Richard during a lively Q&A session. This exchange enriched their understanding of human rights and governance practices, inspiring dialogue on how these principles can be strengthened within Malaysia. The session reaffirmed the university’s dedication to fostering platforms for thought-provoking conversations, equipping its community with the knowledge and passion needed to create a positive impact both within the country and beyond.
