The ZTE NextGen 5G Hackathon, a joint effort between Multimedia University (MMU) and ZTE Malaysia, showcased groundbreaking 5G innovations on 17 October 2024 at MMU’s Cyberjaya campus. The competition, which garnered 46 entries from 18 universities, spanned four key thematic categories: Healthcare, Smart Cities, Infrastructure, and Environment, reflecting the hackathon’s focus on the transformative potential of 5G technology. The closing ceremony was officiated by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU. During the ceremony, Dr. Diong Kah Seng, Vice President of ZTE Malaysia Corporation Sdn. Bhd. and Ir. Azizi A. Hadi, Chief Development Officer of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) delivered their speeches to the audiences.
The ten finalists, who advanced after a rigorous selection process, presented their 5G-powered solutions to a panel of esteemed judges from both industry and academia. Among the panel were Ir. Azizi A. Hadi, Chief Development Officer of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC); Ts. Steven Low Kang Wen, Chief Operating Officer of AGMO Holdings Berhad; and Dr. Lee It Ee, Deputy Director of the Research Management Centre at MMU. The judging criteria focused on creativity, technical feasibility, and real-world application of the proposed solutions.
The prize-giving ceremony saw the grand prize awarded to Yeo Quan Xiang, a Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons.) in Artificial Intelligence student from MMU. His project, titled “Critical Infrastructure Monitoring using 5G, Kubernetes, and AI,” earned him a cash prize of RM8,000. The second prize was awarded to Team Delta, while Team Kneeboi Promax proudly claimed the third prize, both hailing from Asia Pacific University (APU). They received impressive cash prizes of RM4,000 and RM1,000, respectively. In addition, each winning team was awarded a ZTE 5G router worth RM2,000, further enhancing their access to cutting-edge technology.
The event received enthusiastic support from MMU student bodies, particularly the MMU Engineering Society and the IEEE MMU Student Branch. This event not only highlighted the incredible talent emerging from universities but also reinforced the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and industry leaders in shaping the future of 5G technology in Malaysia.
