The Faculty of Engineering implemented an IoT-based smart farm at Pusat Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PPDK) Precinct 14, Putrajaya, providing a valuable community engagement platform. The project, initiated by Dr. Nurul Nadia, was further supported by Dr. Lo Yew Cheong, Dr. Lim Sin Liang, Ir. Dr. Siva Priya Thiagarajah, and members of the EngSoc MMU Smart Technology Team (MUST). Launched in February 2024, the project reached its highlight on 4 October 2024, with a comprehensive knowledge transfer workshop delivered to the PPDK community.
The workshop welcomed 5 students, 11 staff, and 14 parents from PPDK, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge in smart farming and IoT technology. Participants learned how to integrate these advanced technologies to promote sustainable agricultural practices, creating a solid foundation for future growth. Through hands-on activities, the participants were shown how to prepare their smart farming system for cultivation and future harvests, ensuring practical experience alongside theoretical understanding.
In August 2024, the IoT system was fully installed, enabling the PPDK staff to monitor critical farming parameters such as ultrasonic, humidity, and temperature levels through their smart devices using the HomeAssistant platform. This system has empowered PPDK staff by simplifying farm management and creating a more convenient and efficient workflow.
The initiative is particularly impactful for the special needs community at PPDK, as it introduces an enriching, hands-on activity while also supplying fresh produce for the center’s consumption. The integration of IoT technology is expected to greatly enhance the center’s smart farming efforts, providing a meaningful activity and potentially expanding their agricultural capacity in the future.
PPDK staff expressed their deep appreciation for the project, recognizing the immense benefits it brings to their community. The center looks forward to harvesting the fruits of their labor with their first crop of hydroponic produce in early November 2024, marking a successful start to their venture into sustainable farming.
