On 20 September 2024, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) Alumni Committee hosted a sharing session titled “The Power of Words: How Effective Communication Drives Success”. The session was led by Mr. Bryan Teh, a Mechanical Engineering graduate from the Class of 2018. Mr. Teh, after an enriching stint at Daikin, transitioned into entrepreneurship by founding his own media company, Emcee Bryan Entertainment & EBA Academy, where he has built a strong personal brand and become a sought-after emcee.
Kicking off with a dynamic introduction, Mr. Bryan immediately captured the audience’s attention by sharing his personal journey and experiences in mastering effective communication. He engaged his juniors with interactive activities such as self-introduction techniques and exercises on communicating intentions and ideas clearly. He also emphasised that beyond technical proficiency, communication skills are paramount for fostering relationships with colleagues, partners, clients, and external stakeholders. He highlighted the significance of non-verbal cues like face-to-face interactions and gestures in making a lasting impact.
Additionally, Mr. Bryan underscored the role of personal branding in enhancing one’s marketability and employability in today’s competitive job market. He shared insights on how a well-crafted personal brand can open doors to new opportunities and set individuals apart in their careers. During the Q&A session, students posed thoughtful questions, particularly about distinguishing between professional communication and casual conversation. Mr. Teh offered practical advice, explaining the nuances between the two and how to navigate each context effectively.
The session was an inspiring and interactive experience, with students fully engaged and excited to connect with a successful FET alumnus. Mr. Bryan’s guidance left a lasting impression, equipping participants with valuable communication strategies that will undoubtedly contribute to their future success.
