From 9th to 13th September 2024, Diploma students from the Faculty of Business (FOB) organised a series of vibrant and interactive events as part of their Introduction to Event Management course. These activities provided students with practical experience in event planning and management, engaging both the internal university community and external groups.
The first event, a Colouring Competition at Tadika Seri Tunas Ceria, was themed Colours of Unity. Twenty-nine young participants, aged 5 to 6, showcased their creativity by expressing the concept of unity through art. The event successfully nurtured a sense of national pride and harmony in a fun and engaging way, subtly reinforcing values of diversity and togetherness among the children.
The second event, a Mini Basketball Competition, offered an energetic, hands-on experience for MMU students. The competition not only promoted physical fitness but also emphasized teamwork and communication, fostering a spirit of friendly rivalry while teaching valuable lessons in cooperation, fair play, and collaboration.
The following day saw two more exciting events unfold. The first was a Carboot Sale, where students sold 50 packets of popcorn within two hours, demonstrating their ability to engage creatively with the community. This hands-on entrepreneurial activity provided the students with practical business skills, including marketing and customer interaction.
The second event was a Wellness Talk delivered by Ms. Geeta Krishnasamy, a certified yoga instructor and wellness expert. Titled Navigating Building Resilience and Managing Stress, the talk focused on mental health and emotional well-being. Ms. Geeta shared mindfulness techniques and effective strategies for stress management, equipping students with valuable tools to navigate daily challenges. Her insights into resilience-building made the session both impactful and informative, resonating strongly with attendees.
The final day featured the STEM Junior Race at Tadika Sacred Heart Convent, where 20 children, aged 5 to 6, were tasked with building race cars from recycled plastic bottles. The event creatively combined STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education with sustainability. A bottle collection campaign, organized in advance, helped raise awareness about recycling and environmental responsibility, while the hands-on activity introduced children to fundamental STEM concepts.
Simultaneously, another group of students marked Hari Malaysia on the MMU campus with interactive sessions. Participants were invited to share their thoughts on what it means to be Malaysian, and these reflections were displayed on a Compliment Wall. This initiative fostered a strong sense of unity and pride within the MMU community, allowing participants to reflect on their national identity and celebrate their shared heritage.
The last event for the week was a team building workshop organsied and facilitated by the students. In this workshop they also invited Dr Susan as the guest speaker to conclude the workshop. Through these dynamic and well-executed events, the diploma students not only gained valuable practical experience in event management but also honed essential skills such as leadership, teamwork, and communication. These events served as a platform for students to connect with both the MMU community and the wider public, making a positive impact while enhancing their personal and professional growth.
Well done!
