On 2 September 2024, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) hosted a series of impactful Petronas Adjunct Lectures at MMU Melaka, organised by the Industrial Linkage Committee (ILC). These lectures saw a total participation of 77 students and academic staff, covering a broad range of topics relevant to the oil and gas industry, and providing valuable insights and knowledge to the attendees.
The first lecture, titled “Mechanical Engineering Applications in Oil and Gas Exploration,” was conducted by Mr. Azam Syah Jaafar, Principal Pipeline Engineer, and Ms. Siti Aishah Ali Noor Razak, Lead Pipeline Engineer, both from Petronas. They focused on the design and operation of drilling equipment, deep-sea exploration challenges, and the role of materials science in harsh environments, concluding with maintenance and reliability engineering.
In the session titled “Introduction to Internal Combustion Engine,” Mr. Azmi Md Lasin, Principal Engineer, and Mr. Arif Nasaruddin, Staff Engineer, both from PETRONAS Group Technical Solutions (GTS), provided a comprehensive overview of gas turbines and conventional engines. They highlighted the practical applications of internal combustion engines (ICE) across various industries, offering participants a foundational understanding of these critical technologies.
Another session in the series, “Digital Transformation and Data Analytics in Oil and Gas,” featured Mr. M. Hisham Bin Abu Bakar, Principal Pipeline Integrity Engineer, and Ms. Nurazzura Mohd. Fuzi, Senior Pipeline Engineer, both from PETRONAS GTS. They discussed the revolutionary impact of digital technologies, including IoT implementation, predictive maintenance using big data, real-time monitoring, and cybersecurity in oil and gas operations.
Concluding the series, the lecture on “Energy Transition and Sustainability in Oil and Gas” was conducted by Mr. M. Faisal Aziz, Petronas Pipeline Staff Engineer, and Mr. Azam Syah Jaafar. They explored how the industry is adapting to the global shift towards sustainable practices, discussing initiatives like carbon capture and storage (CCS) and renewable energy integration. The session emphasised the industry’s role in reducing environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions.
These lectures enriched participants’ understanding of the evolving landscape of the oil and gas sector, emphasising the importance of technological advancements, sustainability, and practical applications.
