Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wong Wai Kit from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) delivered an invited talk titled “DATA CENTER: Challenges and Opportunities Towards Utility, Maintenance and Management” at Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Engineering College (DSEC), Perambalur, Tamilnadu, India on 6 August 2024. The talk was attended by over 400 teaching staff and final-year undergraduate students from the Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Information Technology (IT), Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Computer Applications, and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) programs.
The event is part of an ongoing collaboration between MMU and DSEC, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2023, which focuses on research collaboration and the organization of talks and lectures. During the session, Dr. Wong provided a comprehensive overview of the evolution of data centers, from their inception to modern-day advancements. He explained the various classifications of data centers globally, detailed the equipment and systems integral to their operation, and discussed the three primary needs—security, power, and cooling—and the challenges associated with each.
Dr. Wong’s presentation also highlighted the career opportunities available within the data center sector, aiming to spark students’ interest in pursuing careers in this rapidly growing field. Additionally, the talk underscored the importance of identifying community and industry-relevant research topics to foster collaborative research initiatives. The session provided valuable insights, equipping students with a thorough understanding of data centers and encouraging them to consider this dynamic industry as a potential career path.
Another session was held at the Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education (KARE) in Krishnankoil, Tamil Nadu, India, where Dr. Wong delivered the inaugural lecture at the International Conference on Development in Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment and Early Intervention through Cutting Edge Technology (INCDAD) 2024 on 2 August 2024.
KARE is renowned for its academic excellence, ranking 36th among engineering colleges, 48th overall, and 29th among universities according to the India National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2023. The conference, organized by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and Bio-Medical Engineering, aimed to explore the latest advancements in Alzheimer’s treatment and early intervention techniques.
Dr. Wong’s one-hour inaugural lecture, titled “Patients’ Tracking System for Dementia Nursing Homes,” attracted over 200 researchers from India and around the world who specialize in Alzheimer’s disease treatment and early intervention. The lecture provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by dementia patients and dementia nursing homes (DNH), presenting innovative engineering and technological solutions to address these issues. Dr. Wong also discussed future directions for research and development in this field. Both events received significant media coverage, with features in local Tamil and Hindi newspapers, highlighting the importance and impact of the talks.
