As part of the University Social Responsibility (USR) project, 18 students from the Faculty of Business (FOB) embarked on a visit to the Tzu Chi Recycling and Education Center on 27 March 2024. Led by Mdm. Siow Yung Ern and her dedicated staff committee members namely Dr. Subhacini, Mdm. Kerk Peck Hoon, and Ms. Ng Woan Ming, this initiative aligned with the university’s commitment to raising awareness about recycling and its significance for the environment, in line with ESG goals.
Located in Ayer Keroh, Melaka, the Tzu Chi Recycling and Education Center serves as a beacon of environmental education. Through exhibitions and educational programs, the center underscores the importance of recycling and its contribution to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives. Additionally, its thrift store offers reusable items while providing opportunities for senior citizens to engage in recycling activities.
During the visit, students actively participated in various recycling activities, including sorting copper wires, paper, and plastic bottles. They also learned about the detrimental effects of plastic and food waste on the environment. The session culminated in a dialogue between Tzu Chi members and students, fostering a deeper understanding of recycling practices and their environmental impact.
This experiential learning opportunity proved invaluable as students gained firsthand insights into waste reduction and recycling practices. By encouraging them to take proactive steps in waste management, the visit inspired students to become advocates for environmental sustainability within their communities. It is hoped that this transformative experience will motivate students to instigate positive change and encourage their peers to join the movement towards a greener, more sustainable future.
