A group of students from the MMU Amnesty Club embarked on a meaningful journey to Gombak, Selangor, where they visited the Rohingya Women Development Network (RWDN) on 18 August 2023. The organisation serves as a beacon of hope for Rohingya women, with a focus on education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and advocacy for their rights.
During their visit, the students gained invaluable insights into the challenges and daily lives of Rohingya women living in Malaysia. They were also exposed to a hands-on session where they learned to craft tassel earrings, a significant source of income for Rohingya women. Although the process proved labour-intensive, with 600 strings required to create a single tassel for a pair of earrings, the students immersed themselves in the activity with enthusiasm.
The visit also featured a delightful taste of authentic Rohingya cuisine, satisfying the participants’ palates with flavours and warmth. The day concluded with an entertaining game, leaving everyone with cherished memories. Despite the shortness of the trip, it was both enlightening and enjoyable, allowing the students to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the Rohingya people, especially women, and raising awareness about their circumstances.
