A total of 15 students from the Faculty of Business (FOB) partook in a field trip to Royal Selangor Pewter on 1 June 2023. Through this visit, the students were able to have a piece of first-hand and hands-on knowledge of the pewter industry. Accompanied by Dr. Susan Chin, the students were briefed on the importance of quality and craftsmanship.
The company was established in 1885, when a young pewter smith named Yong Koon arrived in Malaya from the Chinese port of Shantou, armed with little more than a set of tools and a determination to succeed. Today, Yong Koon’s humble enterprise is Royal Selangor, the world’s foremost name in quality pewter.
Royal Selangor is renowned for its bespoke commissions. Trophies, premiums, and mementos, from the sleek to the ornate, have graced many product launches, anniversaries, and grand openings around the world, and have made appearances at premier sporting events like the F1 Grand Prix and the ATP World Tour. Royal Selangor is a diversified enterprise that includes two sister brands – Selberan for fine jewelry and Comyns for sterling silver products.
In 1979, the company received a royal warrant from the Sultan of Selangor. To reflect the royal endorsement and the diverse nature of the company, Selangor Pewter changed its name to Royal Selangor in 1992. It continues to be run by the third and fourth generations of the Yong family. The field trip was concluded successfully with the assistance of Mr. Hafiz and Mr. Safwan who represented the Royal Selangor Pewter.
