The Faculty of Business (FOB) took a proactive step to enhance student excellence by introducing the FOB’s Peer Tutoring Programme 2023, which commenced on 15th May until 19th June 2023. This program aimed to provide academic support to students in various subjects and was made possible with the involvement of five dedicated tutors. These tutors, comprising undergraduate and postgraduate students from FOB, volunteered their time and expertise to assist their peers in achieving academic success. Leading this initiative was Ms. Nur Faezah Jayiddin, the Head of Student Engagement & Experience in the faculty, who oversaw the smooth execution of the programme.
To ensure the effectiveness of this program, the subjects for tutoring were selected based on student preferences and the availability of tutors. The subjects offered included DFA5054 – Financial Accounting, DBS5014 – Business Management, DBS5044 – Principles of Marketing, DSP5614 – Probability and Statistics, and BST1034 – Statistics for Managers. Approximately 15 students actively participated in the FOB’s Peer Tutoring Programme, seeking guidance and support in these subjects. The tutoring sessions were conducted through a combination of face-to-face meetings and online interactions, allowing flexibility and accommodating the diverse needs of the students. Each session typically lasted for a maximum of two hours, providing ample time for tutors to address students’ questions and concerns effectively.
To ensure tutors were well-equipped, FOB lecturers of each subject contributed their learning materials for reference purposes. This programme not only aimed to assist students in their studies but also served as a platform to groom future educators and leaders within the faculty. The tutors gained valuable soft skills, including communication, coordination, teamwork, and problem-solving, through their involvement in the programme.
As a result of the FOB’s Peer Tutoring Programme, both tutors and tutees benefited greatly. Tutors improved their skills and knowledge by guiding their peers, while tutees gained valuable insights, increased confidence in their studies, and learned new learning techniques shared by the tutors. This initiative exemplifies the faculty’s commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment that empowers students to excel academically and develop crucial skills for their future endeavours.
Well done!
