Two separate sessions of the PETRONAS Series Talk were organised by the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) through its Industrial Linkage Community on 10th November 2022.
The first session entitled “Introduction of Pipeline Engineering” was conducted by the PETRONAS officers, Ir Tan Chin Chien, Staff Offshore Pipeline Engineering; Ms. Mas Nazli Aziah M. Adnan, Senior Engineer, Offshore Pipeline Engineering and Mr. Edmund Chelliah, Senior Mechanical (Piping) Engineer who have vast experiences in the oil and gas (O&G) industry. The session was attended by 10 Mechanical Engineering students, and they were exposed to knowledge ranging from pipeline design, construction, instrumentation and control, maintenance, inspection, integrity management and corrosion as well as stress corrosion cracking prevention. The session also elaborated on the vital role of pipeline engineering, especially in the said industry.
While 23 students partook in the second talk session which highlighted the topic titled “The Relevance of 3D Model Review and Laser Scanning in O&G”. The talk was presented by Ir. Ts. Jaafar bin Hamdan, Mechanical Piping Engineer, and Mr. Hishamuddin Mat Rani, Senior Mechanical Piping Engineer.
The speakers shared the review of the 3D Model in phases which helps discipline engineers to stimulate all possible scenarios to reach the level of ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable). The students were also exposed to Laser Scanning, which this technology helps old plants or platforms to be digitalised in 3D models with high precision. It also improves any modification to be made in a safe and timely manner. All in all, the talk sessions have helped the students to gauge a deeper understanding and acquire new knowledge as well as perspectives from the O&G industry.
