Founded in 1996, Multimedia University (MMU) is the first private university in Malaysia and is today one of the leading universities in the country. Ranked in the top 5 for private Malaysian universities in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2022, in the top 200 in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022, and voted as one of Talentbank’s Employers’ Preferred Universities, MMU offers a variety of foundational, undergraduate and postgraduate courses located across two campuses: one in Ayer Keroh, Melaka, and the other in Cyberjaya, the heart of Malaysia’s Multimedia Super Corridor.
MMU is primarily known for its reputation in the IT field, but courses in other fields such as business, accounting and philosophy are also offered. A commitment towards developing students into exemplary graduates is felt across all MMU’s courses, ensuring that they leave university equipped with the skills needed to secure employment in a modern society and become respected leaders in their own right.
In line with MMU’s commitment to developing students’ extracurricular skills, the university is also a part of the Ministry of Higher Education’s Institutes of Higher Learning Entrepreneurship Action Plan 2021-2025.
Several new units were established to align with the MMU 3.0 plan that will keep MMU in touch with the growth of the new digital economy. This includes the likes of the Research Management Office, Technology Transfer Office, and Entrepreneur Development Centre.
The university’s aim is to guide and support students involved in research and entrepreneurial activities, fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship and helping them broaden their horizons by granting them opportunities to interact and partner with the wider entrepreneurial network in Malaysia.
In addition to that, MMU also maintains partnerships and collaborations with universities and corporations across the globe. While studying at MMU, students have the opportunity to participate in an exchange programme and spend a semester abroad at one of its partner universities.
Students have the option to travel somewhere closer to home such as Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, or further locations like the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Korea. Additionally, MMU also offers outbound internship programmes to its students, allowing them to undergo internships in foreign companies to develop themselves further.
During the course of a degree, MMU’s Career Connect unit will assist students in preparing for their eventual entry into the industry, holding workshops and events designed to improve the employability of soon-to-be graduates, whether solo or in collaboration with one of MMU’s many partners. Upon graduation, can benefit from the Career Connect services, where they can attend events organised for fresh graduates and apply for jobs via the Career Connect portal.
Upon graduation, MMU’s collaborations with institutions and organisations give students opportunities to equip themselves with skills that are currently in high demand. MMU may count companies such as TM, Infineon, ZTE, Huawei, Maybank, CIMB, Ainqa, Fusionex and Vitrox among its collaborators. Through contact with the biggest names in their industry, students are given the chance to further master their subjects and develop themselves, helping them along their path to becoming industry-ready graduates.
For the studious and capable, MMU offers a variety of scholarships. The MMU President’s and Merit Scholarships cover students with outstanding academic performance, while the MMU Talent Scholarship covers students who have proven themselves in their extra-curricular talent at the national or international level. MMU has also partnered with Sin Chew Daily and the STAR Education Fund to provide scholarships to outstanding students who have chosen to pursue their studies in MMU.
Despite being a relatively young Malaysian university compared to its peers, MMU has a strong track record of excellence in its 26 years of history – from the academic success of the initial 42 students in 1996 that led to the founding of MMU, to the present day where 97% of MMU graduates secure employment within six months of completing their studies. MMU continues to be committed to developing the next generation of innovators, allowing them to not just survive, but thrive in a world that is rapidly developing day by day.
