Pavit Coran, our student from the Faculty of Law (FOL) and also a world champion public speaker was invited as a guest speaker at the English Speaking Union Malaysia (ESUM) Luncheon, recently. The theme of the Luncheon Talk was “Correlation between Social Media and the English Language”. Pavit delivered his speech entitled “A Beautiful Weapon”, where he touched on how social media would not be so social if no one understood each other, and what really connects us is not the media, rather it is the common language that we speak, which in this case, is English.
He pointed out the common but heart-breaking situation online which is Hate Speech, where many people have weaponised this despicable form of communication and use it to bully and attack others. He passionately ended his speech with a call to action by appealing to the audience to stand up against hate speech in order to prevent it from being a weapon to destroy humanity. Pavit is grateful for the invitation by the ESUM Council and for the invaluable assistance in making him a world champion at the International Public Speaking Competition (IPSC) 2021 of ESU International held online from London, United Kingdom. The ESUM coaching team was made up of YAM Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah (ESUM Chairman) and other esteemed judges and mentors, namely Madam Jagdish Bhain, Mr Chew Seng Choon and Madam Iris Tan.
At the Luncheon, Pavit was presented the Champion Certificate from ESU International in recognition as the winner of IPSC 2021. In addition, ESUM presented him a Gold wafer for making Malaysia proud by being World Champion, and an honorarium as appreciation for delivering his speech at the Luncheon. Pavit was absolutely ecstatic to present his speech in front of distinguished personalities such as YAM Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah, Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Arshad bin Raja Tun Uda, Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, Dato’ John Louis O’Hara and other esteemed members of the ESUM Council and ESUM members.
Well done, Pavit!
