The Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) held a virtual talk for its alumni webinar series by Mr. Ethan Lim Seng Hoong on 11th October 2021. Around 50 participants participated in the session. Mr. Ethan, our alumnus who graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) Mechanical Engineering in 2006, is currently working as the Staff Mechanical Engineer at Cohu Malaysia Sdn Bhd. He has 15 years of working experience in mechanical design and development specifically automation in semiconductor manufacturing.

Mr. Ethan started his talk by illustrating the fundamental material properties associated with the electric current flow before introducing the semiconducting element in the semiconductors, silicon, which is also commonly known as sands. Mr. Ethan fascinated the FET undergraduates by demystifying the process of transforming the “sands” into computer chips and explained the important roles of mechanical engineers in these complicated processes. He also shared his personal experiences as a staff mechanical engineer which his daily job involves designing, evaluating, and developing ideas to solve complex technical problems and increase efficiency in the back-end semiconductor manufacturing processes.

Mr. Ethan ended the one-hour virtual talk session gracefully by sharing some practical advice and words of encouragement to his fellow juniors in FET. Strong problem-solving skills and excellent communication skills are essentials in paving the way towards a successful engineering career. He encouraged fellow graduates to pursue their engineering passions and choose a career that they truly love and let the creativity and interest flourish to the full potential.
