Multimedia University (MMU) and Penang Institute (PI) completed a virtual Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony on 1 September 2020. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd. Su’ud, President and CEO of MMU signed on behalf of MMU, whilst Dato’ Dr. Ooi Kee Beng, the Executive Director of PI signed on PI’s behalf. Prof. Ir. Dr Hairul Azhar Bin Abdul Rashid, Vice President of Research and Innovation, MMU and Ms. Ong Wooi Leng, Head of Socioeconomics and Statistics of Programme of PI were the witnesses to the signatories of the MoU.

Through this MoU, MMU will embark on a research collaboration with PI, one of the top think tanks in Malaysia. This is another remarkable milestone for MMU, especially in strengthening its ongoing collaboration network. The objective of the MoU is to express the willingness of both parties to engage in research and knowledge sharing activities relating to the completion of the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) project entitled ‘Developing Digital Economy, Automation Models, and Mapping of Heritage Street Foods Beyond the Heritage City Enclave’. This FRGS project is led by Dr. Yvonne Lee from the Faculty of Management (FOM) and supported by her team members from FOM and from UCSI University. The duration of the MoU is for two years, commencing from 1 September 2020 to 30 August 2022.

This MoU is timely, as the Penang State Government, under advice from PI, founded Digital Penang, a body that aims to coordinate and plan the digitalisation process in terms of e-governance, digital infrastructure, the digital economy and digital literacy in the state for the next decade. It is envisioned that this MoU will lead to further collaboration with PI and other state agencies, and also towards more high impact research at MMU.
