The Petronas CHESS Innovation Challenge 2024 was held on 27 November 2024 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). The competition involved a series of innovation challenges among CHESS participating universities. There are 22 universities in total as part of this industry-academia partnership.
The competition focused on 4 categories, New Energy, Circular Economy, Sustainability & Business Operational Excellence. The participants had to endure a gruelling judging process starting from the proposal paper, video pitching, prototype demonstration and finally the Grand Finale on the 27 November 2024.
Two students from the Faculty of Engineering (FOE) at Multimedia University (MMU), Law Yi Yang and Ting Yung Seng, proudly secured the 2nd Runner-Up position in the Petronas CHESS Innovation Challenge 2024 under the Business and Operational Excellence category. Guided by their supervisors, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Wooi Haw and Dr. Nee Chen Hon, the team was recognized for their exceptional performance during the Final Innovation Pitch and received their award on 27 November 2024 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The award was presented by Ir. Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, Senior Vice President of Project Delivery & Technology at PETRONAS.
The competition, which began on 10 September 2024, consisted of three stages: Round 1 (Proposal Paper), Round 2 (Video Pitch), and Round 3 (Prototype Demo). Law Yi Yang and Ting Yung Seng demonstrated remarkable dedication and ingenuity, advancing through all stages to secure their position as one of the top finalists in this prestigious event. On the day of the Finale Pitching, the team was honored to receive guidance and support from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fazly Salleh Bin Abas from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET).
The CHESS (Collaboration with Higher Education Strategic Initiatives) programme, launched by PETRONAS in 2021, aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry by equipping students with the skills needed for the workforce. The CHESS Innovation Challenge 2024 is one of the flagship programmes under CHESS, encouraging innovation and excellence among undergraduate and postgraduate students across Malaysia.

A team from Multimedia University, consisting of three Bachelor of Engineering students and one Foundation in Engineering student, rose to the occasion, showcasing their ingenuity and collaboration. The team secured a commendable 5th place in this rigorous competition, marking a proud moment for their university. The team tackled challenges in the Innovation and Creativity category, blending advanced technical knowledge with fresh perspectives from their diverse academic backgrounds. Their journey to the final stage was guided by their dedicated supervisors, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Wooi Haw, who provided mentorship and strategic insights throughout the process. During the Grand Finale on 4 December 2024, the team impressed judges with their creative solutions and a well-crafted demonstration of their prototype. Their ability to think outside the box and adapt to dynamic challenges set them apart from other competitors.
The team’s achievement in securing 5th place is a testament to their hard work, perseverance, and teamwork. Their success not only brings pride to Multimedia University but also serves as an inspiration for other students to aim high and make a difference.
