FOE Staff and Students Gain Valuable Insights into Emerging Space Technologies
Title: Evolution of Traditional Space to New Space: Converging Consumer-Grade and Space-Grade Electronics
Date: June 2024
Venue: Faculty of Engineering, Multimedia University
Description:
Professor Joseph Sylvester Chang from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, delivered an engaging talk titled “Evolution of Traditional Space to New Space: Converging Consumer-Grade and Space-Grade Electronics.” in June 2024. As the current external examiner for the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) Electronics programme, Professor Chang captivated an audience of over 60 students and staff for nearly two hours, concluding with a Q&A session.
During his presentation, Professor Chang explored the transformative shift in the space industry from large, costly geostationary satellites to a proliferation of low-cost Low-Earth-Orbit satellites. He emphasised how traditional, expensive space-grade integrated circuits (ICs) are being replaced by advanced, more affordable consumer-grade ICs, reflecting significant technological advancements and cost reductions in space exploration. Organised by the Industrial Linkage Committee of the Faculty of Engineering (FOE), the session provided the audience with valuable insights into new space technologies.
