Gaining Insights on Navigating the Financial Minefield
On 14 June 2024, MMU Permata Dunia (class of 2011) alumni, Mr. Wong Choon Hong, currently a Licensed Financial Planner and Financial Adviser’s Representative, delivered an insightful talk titled “Navigating the Financial Minefield: Strategies to Avoid Scams, Debt, and Crisis.” The event was jointly organised by the Banking & Finance Department and Foundation in Business Department of the Faculty of Business at MMU Melaka.
Over 100 students and staff participated in the talk, which aimed to provide attendees with practical strategies to effectively manage their finances and protect themselves against financial scams and pitfalls. Mr. Wong began by introducing the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM) and proceeded to educate attendees about various types of scams such as phishing emails, online shopping scams, job scams, love scams, and investment scams. He provided valuable insights into identifying these scams and emphasised the importance of protecting personal information and reporting suspicious activities promptly.
Highlighting the alarming statistic of 18 daily bankruptcies reported by The Star on 23 June 2022, Mr. Wong also shared proactive strategies to avoid debt and manage financial risks effectively. In conclusion, the event served as an invaluable resource for enhancing financial literacy, empowering individuals to secure their financial futures with confidence. Attendees left equipped to navigate the complexities of personal finance, thanks to Mr. Wong’s expertise and guidance.
