FOB Students’ Engagement in Community Welfare Activities

As part of the Introduction to Event Management course, Diploma students from the Faculty of Business participated in several activities aimed at enhancing the well-being of the university community in September 2024. One of the standout events was the Mini Zoo Exhibition, the first animal exhibition held at the CLC Concourse on 19 September 2024. This small-scale exhibition showcased ten different small animal species, including chicks, ducklings, rabbits, birds, hamsters, tortoises, chameleons, sugar gliders, turtles, and geckos. Notably, two species were endangered, requiring approval from the Jabatan Perlindungan Hidupan Liar dan Taman Negara (Perhilitan) in Johor.

The students successfully obtained the necessary approvals from the state government and worked with various units within MMU to ensure the event’s success. They also managed the logistics of transporting the animals from their owners in Johor to the university. The exhibition provided memorable opportunities for the MMU community to interact with and learn about the animals through engaging introductions from the pet owners and organizing committee. The event concluded safely, prioritizing the well-being of both visitors and the animals.

In addition to the exhibition, a two-day badminton tournament was organised from 13 to 14 September 2024, featuring participants in three categories: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. The students secured sponsorship from Felet International Holding Sdn. Bhd., a prominent badminton sports brand, which contributed prizes worth RM1,300 and provided a tournament banner through ByFlamingo Event.

The winners received Felet-branded badminton rackets, bags, sports T-shirts, and shuttlecocks. The tournament attracted 16 participants in Men’s Singles, 14 pairs in Men’s Doubles, and 7 pairs in Mixed Doubles. Despite the smaller scale of the event, the students adeptly managed challenges related to securing venues, sports equipment, and sponsorships. The tournament was executed successfully, with strict arrangements and first-aid preparations in place to address any potential injuries.

Lastly, a fundraising event for an animal shelter was organised on September 10, 2024, by a dedicated group of animal lovers, successfully raising RM420 for a local animal shelter. This initiative garnered attention from the Pertubuhan Pencinta Hidupan Melaka (PPHM), leading to an invitation for future collaboration on fundraising events.

In addition to the fundraising efforts, creatively executed exhibitions such as the Chinese Yoyo Exhibition, Beauty of Chinese Culture, and mental health awareness fairs, including “Along with Love” and “Do You Love Yourself?”, were conducted by the students. These exhibitions emphasise the importance of mental health and well-being, highlighting that activities should not only focus on profit but also promote community welfare.

The commendable efforts of these students serve as an inspiration to others, demonstrating that they can successfully organise events outside their expertise while overcoming potential obstacles in future initiatives.

Well done!
