Expanding Industry Knowledge with Educational Trips to Melaka Bee Farm and Royal Selangor
In September 2024, students from the Faculty of Business (FOB), enrolled in the Event Management subject under lecturer Nor Fauziana Ibrahim, had the unique opportunity to broaden their industry knowledge through two insightful educational trips. These experiences went beyond traditional classroom learning, providing valuable hands-on exposure to event management, production processes, and sustainable industry practices.
The first trip, on September 18, 2024, took the students to the Melaka Bee Farm, a renowned center for sustainable honey production. Here, the students gained a deep understanding of the intricacies of beekeeping, from the life cycle of bees to their crucial role in the ecosystem. They also learned about the methods used in honey harvesting and how the farm’s operations contribute to both local tourism and sustainable agriculture. Many students found the visit eye-opening, as it revealed the behind-the-scenes efforts required for eco-friendly tourism and community-based ventures. As future event managers, the experience underscored the importance of incorporating sustainability into event planning and operations.
The second trip, on September 20, 2024, was to Royal Selangor, Malaysia’s leading pewter manufacturer, famous for its craftsmanship and mining heritage. During the visit, students were offered a hands-on experience in pewter making, from processing raw materials to crafting the final polished products. A detailed tour of the production facilities allowed students to observe skilled artisans at work, while a presentation on the region’s mining history gave them valuable insight into the cultural and historical context that has shaped Royal Selangor’s success. A highlight of the visit was the interactive workshop, where students had the chance to craft their own pewter items, an experience they found both educational and engaging.
These educational trips provided students with a first-hand look at how industries function, how products are brought to market, and the significant influence of history and culture on industry development. The excursions enriched the students’ understanding of event management, highlighting the practical aspects of production, sustainability, and heritage that are essential to their future careers.
