Diploma Students Gain Real-World Insights at ITEX 2024

On 16 May 2024, a group of 31 Diploma in Business Administration students from the Faculty of Business (FOB) visited the International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2024) at the KLCC Convention Center. This visit was part of their ‘Introduction to Event Management’ course, organised by their lecturer, Ms. Siow Yung Ern, and accompanied by three other academicians: Dr. Subhacini Subramaniam, Ms. Norliza Darus, and Ms. Ng Woan Ming. The visit aimed to expose students to the intricacies of planning and executing events on an international scale.

ITEX 2024 showcased close to 700 inventions, with participants ranging from early childhood education categories to industrial sectors. The exhibition featured inventors from various nationalities, actively pitching their ideas to potential investors. Students had the unique opportunity to observe firsthand how organisers interacted with participants and visitors, arranged the booth layout into different zones, and managed crowd control effectively.

The registration process at ITEX 2024 was notably quick and smooth, leaving a positive impression on the students. Additionally, the accessibility of food with cafes located in the hall added to the convenience. The event organisers’ attention to detail was evident with wastepaper baskets placed at each booth, ensuring the cleanliness and tidiness of the hall, which is crucial for making a good impression on potential investors.

As it was the opening day of the event, VVIPs were present, visiting various booths. Students observed how the security team ensured the safe movement of VVIPs around the hall and their interactions with participants. This aspect of the visit provided valuable insights into the logistical and security considerations of high-profile events.

Following the visit, students were tasked with preparing a report to apply the concepts learned in class to their observations at the international event. They analysed the event, identifying its success factors and evaluating the effectiveness of its execution.

Overall, the visit to ITEX 2024 was an eye-opening experience for both students and lecturers. Listening to participants passionately pitch their ideas was inspiring. The trip was highly beneficial, allowing students to relate event management concepts to real-world applications. This experience has sparked their interest in future industrial visits, further enhancing their academic and professional growth.
