IT Society Industrial visit to Frost and Sullivan
IT society had conducted an industrial visit to Frost and Sullivan company at Mont Kiara KL on 03 January, 2020. It is a company which provides critical solution to support client growth strategies. They support various industries such as cybersecurity, healthcare, oil and gas, information and communications technologies, aerospace and defense, agriculture and nutrition and more.

MockCID was a detective game organised by IT society. On 12 January, 2020, participants needed to solve a series of mysteries detective game. Such a game trickle the students mind in a creative and intellectual way.
Malaysian Youth Bioinformatics Symposium (MYBS) 2019

Malaysian Youth Bioinformatics Symposium (MYBS) was a program that was organized by the Bioinformatics students of Multimedia University (MMU), Melaka on 02 November 2019. Bioinformatics is a science field that combines both biology and information technology. This multidisciplinary field is still new in Malaysia and the development of this field needs to be encouraged. This program aims to improve the understanding and skills in the field of bioinformatics among its students in Malaysia. Therefore, MYBS is designed to give better exposures to the importance and potential future of bioinformatics in Malaysia.

The Intelligent Cloud Computing Special Interest Group (ICC-SIG) of Faculty of Information Science and Technology (FIST), Multimedia University has successfully co-organised the High Performance Computing (HPC), Grid, Cloud and Identity Summit (HGCI2016) and the ThunderCloud IoT-Big Data Symposium 2016 (TIBDS2016) on 7th and 8th September 2016.

The joint event is a gathering of minds from academia and industry with the aim of sharing ideas and experiences in innovative use of available technologies. It is co-organised by Multimedia University, Academic Grid Malaysia, National Grid Computing Initiative and MYREN e-Research, Grids and Federated Science Cloud Working Group. This event was officiated by Tn. Hj. Wahilman bin Siwar, the Head of ICT, Jabatan Ketua Menteri Melaka.

The two days’ event provides a platform to learn and share the best that High Performance Computing (HPC), Grid, Cloud and Identity technologies have to offer. Participants are exposed to how these advanced technologies are driving activities in research & development, collaboration and enterprise computing around the world. In addition, the event also offers great insights into the world of Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data Analytics (BDA). Renowned experts from both academia and industry including Multimedia University, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, University Malaya, Perdana University, Altair Technologies, Informology, Novorient, Abyres, Fujitsu Ltd. and NovaGlobal have shared their knowledge on the latest technologies and developments that have been instrumental in the rapid proliferation and adoption of these emerging fields globally.

A Special Session: IEEE Region 10, Forum on Industry Relations which gathers the Industry and University representatives to discuss matter of importance to both sides towards a Smarter Malaysia was also held during the two days event.

The event was sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOSTI) and IEEE Region 10 (Asia Pacific Region) as well as industry sponsors which includes Sifulan, NovaGlobal, Fujitsu Ltd., Novorient and Abyres. Collaborators include Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Perdana University and University Pertanian Malaysia (UPM).

Security Technology Field Trip 2014

38 students, mainly from Security Technology’s final year were joining the field trip to Microsoft Malaysia.

Microsoft is a multinational computer technology corporation that develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports a wide range of software products for computing devices and their Malaysia head office is located in the Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

During the field trip, the students are briefed on the opportunity to enroll into Microsoft Virtual Academy (MVA), which offers online Microsoft training delivered by experts to help technologists continually learn, with hundreds of courses, in 11 different languages, with the mission to help developers, knowledgeable IT professionals and advanced students learn the latest technology, build their skills, and advance their careers. Bioinformatics Field Trip 2014

The trip was held on 11th July 2014 to Novocraft Technologies Company in Petaling Jaya Selangor. 17 students from FIST especially from Bioinformatics programme have joint the field trip. The trip was accompanied by Dr. Ng Choon Han and Dr. Margaret Sheldon. Novocraft Technologies Company is the top company in Malaysia in the area of Bioinformatics.


AI Programme Field Trip 2014

FIST AI Programme, in collaboration with Faculty of Engineering Technology (FET) has organised a field trip to visit COHU. Inc., in conjunction with its Enabling Technology Day on 9th of April 2014. COHU Inc., is a supplier of test handling, burn-in and thermal solutions used by the semiconductor industry, microwave communications and closed-circuit television equipment. COHU Inc. (M) Sdn. Bhd is responsible for manufacturing and research and development of semiconductor equipments.

The event started st 10am with a talk given by COHU Inc. representatives at CLCR2005. The talk gives a brief introduction about the company, as well as some job opportunities for current students who are interested to explore the field of computer vision and pattern recognition. At 12.15pm, about a group of 4o students and staffs (both FIST and FET) were invited for a lunch session hosted by COHU Inc. Malaysia, at Restoran Subaidah, MITC. After the lunch, the group headed straight to the factory for visit.

During the visit, the students were exposed to different equipments used in the maufacturing of semiconductor equipments. Some of the theoretical and practical aspects involved in the manufacturing processes were demonstrated. The use of computer vision and pattern recognition for real-time detection of equipment markings were shown during this factory visit.

FIST AI students were benefited most, during this visit as it gives them a practical view of the applications of computer vision and pattern recognition. It is hoped that more of this kind of visit will be organised soon. The factory trip ends around 2.45pm.

Location: HP Global Centre, Cyberjaya, Malaysia

Computer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard (HP) Co opened its HP Global Centre in Cyberjaya, which it claims is the largest facility of its kind in the country. The 60-acre campus will address multiple HP and client business needs. It comprises a global applications development and support centre, as well as a global finance centre. It is one of the six global delivery hubs that HP has in the world. The others are in India, China, the Philippines, Costa Rica, and Bulgaria. HP described the centre as the single biggest investment made by a multinational in Cyberjaya.

During the field trip, the students are briefed on the potential career opportunity with HP, i.e.: by joining their Graduate Development Programme. We are also provided with a tour of HP IT building, canteens, cafes, gym rooms, squash courts, and the working offices.

Talk 1: What is Big Data?

The talk was organised during the Cloud Computing Mini Symposium in FIST. The speaker was Mr. Szilard Banary who has 18 years of experience in software and solution presales, design, development and management as well as a specialist in the Teradata Aster Discovery Platform and Teradata’s Portfolio for Hadoop. He had explained what Big Data is all about, the importance of Big Data and how Hadoop supports Big Data. At the end of the talk, there was Q&A session with interesting gifts prepared for students.

Talk 2: Windows Azure

The talk was organized during the Cloud Computing Mini Symposium in FIST. The speaker was Mr. Aswin Chantraksuwan who is technical Expertise: Windows Expert-Consumer He had explained what Cloud platform and Windows Azure platform specifically. Also attended Mr. Ngan Seok Chern, Microsoft Student Partners Program Manager, Snake Chia, Windows Phone 8 apps Developer and Pun Soon Teck, Microsoft Technical Lead. At the end of the talk, there was lucky draw and Q&A session with interesting gifts prepared for students.

B. IT (Hons) Data Communications and Networking (DCN) programme is benchmarked against Bachelor of Computing (Computer Science) Honours programme offered by the School of Computing (SoC), NUS. The visit includes a meeting with Prof. David S. Rosenblum (Dean), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lee Wee Sun (Vice Dean of Undergraduate Studies) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lee Mong Li Janice (Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies). The purpose of the visit is to clarify, verify and collect information to further improve the desktop benchmarking exercise which was conducted earlier. A guided tour around the school facilities was conducted after the meeting.

66 students, mainly from Security Technology’s final year were joining the field trips to F-Secure and IRIS.

1. F-Secure Corporation (formerly Data Fellows) is an anti-virus, computer security and computer software company based in Helsinki, Finland. The company has 20 country offices and a presence in more than 100 countries, with Security Lab operations in Helsinki, Finland and in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. F-Secure claims that it was the first antivirus vendor to establish a presence on the World Wide Web. The F-Secure Labs weblog tracks global internet and mobile security threats.

During the field trip, the students are briefed on the current trend and the needs of malware analysis and they are also introduced to F-Secure working environment such as the malware lab and research lab. All students are provided with a malware protection for PC and Mobile Devices freely for one year.

2. IRIS Corporation Berhad is a global solutions provider with core expertise in digital identity, business, farming and environmental solutions. During the field trip, the students are briefed on the company overview and they are also introduced to the potential job opportunities with IRIS by Mr. Lee Yung Sing, Director of Corporate Software Services, Project Management & Sales.

A field trip was conducted on 26th June 2013 to Bank Negara Malaysia’s Knowledge Management Centre which is located at Sasana Kijang, Kuala Lumpur. 66 students participated in the trip. Students were exposed to knowledge management systems, implementation and culture in the organization. We were also invited to visit Bank Negara Museums and Art Gallery.

IT Society Melaka Campus had organized a trip to AIMS Data Center in KL Headquarter, Menara Aik Hua for students majoring in Data Communication and Networking.
There are 38 participants.

The purpose to visit the data center is to learn the best practices for data center design, strategy, planning, and virtualization, and to explore the job opportunities in the area of networking.


Software Development Workshop

ITM programme Field Trip 2012

On 24 October 2012, a field trip was conducted to IBM Training Centre, Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) in Cyberjaya and IBM Malaysia Sdn Bhd in Petaling Jaya.

International Business Machines Corporation, or IBM, is an American multinational technology and consulting corporation, with headquarters in Armonk, New York, United States. IBM manufactures and markets computer hardware and software, and offers infrastructure, hosting and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology.

In the morning, the students visited IBM Taining Centre at MDeC. The students were briefed on the institutions’ role and fuctions, working environment, career opportunities, current trends, product and services by theIBM Academic Initiative Programme Manager, IBM Global Delivery Center (GDC ) Manager, Nexbis HR Manager and MDeC representative.

Later, in in the afternoon, the students visited IBM Malaysia Headquarters. There, the students were briefed on the current IBM technologies and products. They visited IBM Innovation Centre and server room. The students were also introduced to the current trends and working environment in IBM.


F-Secure-MDeC Train-the-Trainer 2012

A five-day train-the-trainer programme has been conducted by computer security company F-Secure at FIST, MMU Melaka campus on 24-28 September 2012.

The primary objective of the bi-annual programme, which is organised in collaboration with MDeC, is to empower local talents and help them improve their IT security skills, especially in combating malware (malicious software).

30 lecturers from 10 local universities have signed up for the programme.

The programme scopes mainly focus on security subjects, such as the static and dynamic analysis on malware, as well as the analysis of mobile malware.

The programme also aims to build awareness for other career options in the profession.
