Connecting Youngsters with University Experience and STEM Workshops
As part of corporate social responsibility initiative, a group of Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) lecturers and students from the Centre for Engineering Computational Intelligence (CECI) partook in a Teen Talk Programme at Kafeteen, UTC Melaka recently. The programme was part of the LPPKN’s (Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara) Teen Educators and a total of 40 students from 5 schools around Melaka were invited to join the programme.
The Teen Talk was divided into two sessions with the first session conducted by the Teen Educators focusing on the current issues faced by teens. In the second session, FET’s team gave the students a sneak peek into university life, how to select courses and field of study, the expectations in university life and how to handle the challenges that come along. The session aimed to motivate the students and encourage them to do better in their studies through fun activities with the seniors from MMU.
Apart from that, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Paya Rumput, Melaka had invited Center of Intelligent Cloud Computing (CICC) of Faculty of Information Science and Technology (FIST) to organise ICT and Science Do-It-Yourself (DIY) workshops during its annual event, STEM Carnival 2019 recently. The carnival was officiated by Dr. Noorzeliana Idris, Deputy Director of Pusat STEM Negara, Ministry of Education. The carnival aims to attract students’ interest in STEM and to create awareness about interesting subjects in information technology (IT), engineering and sciences.
In ICT DIY workshop, 120 students gained hands-on knowledge and practical skills in developing mobile applications, designing attractive graphics and Google sites, setting up online stores and creating a simple traffic light prototype using Arduino. Meanwhile, almost 200 students joined Science DIY laboratories learned on how to create a bouncing ball and how to extract DNA from living materials. The workshops received positive feedback from the school students and teachers.
