FET Alumnus Shares Insights on Digital Transformation
Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) ushered in the new year with its 5th FET Alumni Talk Series on 3rd of January 2019, featuring the charismatic Ms. Tan Mei Yan. The engaging session, held at FET Intelligent Learning Lab – RoboSpace, was organised by FET Alumni Committee members: Mr. Low Kean Ong, Ms. Lim Sin Ting, Mr. Mohamed Syafiq Bin Nor Hisham, Ms. Tan Yee Mun and Mr. Desmond Kho Teck Kiang as a platform for alumni to connect with their juniors and build a strong network with their alma mater.
Being a vanguard in fast-paced industry for the past six years, the telecommunications engineering alumnus from the class of 2011 presented an evocative session entitled “Navigating through MNC and Digital Transformation”. Ms. Tan gave an insight into her experience and exposure to global business culture working as a technical trainer and consultant in Huawei Malaysia, and a paradigm shift which led her into getting her MBA and now inbound for Microsoft Malaysia. Amongst the key takeaways from the talk are the important factors to inculcate a growth mindset for future career advancement and to take the initiative to seek inter-related opportunities through job camp or internship program.
Quoting “Change is the only constant”, Ms. Tan perceived self-initiated continuous learning is inevitable in any career. She also raised awareness of the pivotal skills needed to compete in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0, AI, Big Data, Cloud Computing and Data Science. As a concluding remark, she urged future graduates to cultivate analytical thinking skills, emotional intelligence and creativity that are less susceptible to AI replication.
